Letterwork
Since 2019 I’ve been conducting ethnographic research with different communities of people who, in one way or another, care for letters and writing. I’ve hung out with letterpress printers, type designers, typographers, sign painters, neon letter benders, members of the Unicode Consortium, librarians, archivists, design instructors, and a bunch of other people who really like type. I’m working on a book based on all of this — each chapter is focused on a different kind of “letterwork,” but as a whole the book offers (fingers crossed!) a new and unique perspective on the social value of writing.&#38;nbsp;</description>

I’m currently an associate professor in the department of anthropology at UC Irvine. I received my PhD from UCLA in 2008. I study lots of things, but design seems to be the most consistent.
